Beethoven Piano                                       30th Mar 2020 The Bear Club Map

Born in the Czech Republic piano virtuoso Slávka Vernerová- Pěchočová returns to Luton after her visit in 2017 with a memorable recital of Czech masterpieces.

As a part of our survey of the Beethoven piano sonatas her programme this time includes perhaps the most popular of them all – the beguiling Moonlight. Dedicated to Countess Giulietta Giucciardi, the sustained and eerily beautiful opening movement seems to speak of affairs of the heart. What then of the virtuosic turbulence of the final pages?

‘One of those poems that human nature cannot qualify…’

Hector Berlioz on the Moonlight sonata

Slávka also plays the E flat sonata from Op 31and the compact two movement Op 78 sonata which was dedicated to Countess Teréz Brunszvik. She was a piano pupil of Beethoven and there are suggestions that he was smitten with her. Perhaps she was ‘the immortal beloved’, the mysterious addressee of a love letter which the composer wrote in 1812. This passionate declaration was however never delivered... Prepare to be transported to the largely unrequited world of 19th Century romantic adventure.

‘Where words leave off, music begins.’ Heinrich Heine
