Beethoven Piano 5th Oct 2020 The Bear Club Map
Irish pianist Fiachra Garvey plays Beethoven’s op 28 D major sonata. The Pastoral subtitle was the whim of a later publisher and is a rather subjective indication as to the mood of the work. Repeated pedal notes in the bass are something of a feature, and the slow movement’s lyricism over a ceaseless staccato figure in the left hand is particularly ear catching.
Fiachra also plays the elegant Op 79, Beethoven’s shortest essay in complete sonata form. This will be followed by one of the great final sonatas, Op 101. Written in 1816 the composer described this remarkable product of his final years as ‘a series of impressions and reveries’.
The recital also includes Chopin’s Tragic polonaise in F sharp minor. There is no doubting the Polish composer’s reverence for Beethoven, his own three miraculous piano sonatas direct heirs to that Viennese tradition.
‘Fiachra Garvey… brings a deep and infectious enthusiasm, combined with insight and technical comfort.’
