Beethoven Violin                                       23rd Mar 2020 The Bear Club Map

The final concert in our series curated by John Lenehan surveying the 10 sonatas for violin and piano by Ludwig van Beethoven. International virtuoso Leland Chen, a one time protégé of Yehudi Menuhin, joins pianist John Lenehan in a programme that includes the epic Kreutzer sonata, a work which these two exceptional musicians have recorded. Of all the ten sonatas it is the one conceived on the grandest scale, the three movements lasting a monumental 40 minutes in performance. In terms of its wider cultural influence the work inspired Tolstoy’s novella The Kreutzer Sonata, which in turn led to Janáček’s first string quartet – quite some legacy!

Alongside the Kreutzer, the E flat sonata from the Op 12 set will remind us not only of Beethoven’s earlier provenance as a Classical composer, but also his famed virtuosity as a pianist (the celebrated composer Carl Czerny, a pupil of Beethoven, remarked that the great maestro’s ability to pay scales and trills at a lightning speed was second to no one!). Delius’s rhapsodic Sonata No.3 completes the programme, ensuring that this is an evening of consummate music making at its very finest.

‘…the formidable chamber music duo of Leland Chen, a strong, sensitive violinist and John Lenehan, a pianist of virtuoso proclivities…’  The Strad
