Engegård Quartet                          5th Mar 2018 at St. Mary’s Church  Map

Formed under the midnight sun in Lofoten in 2006, the Engegård Quartet has rapidly become one of Norway’s most sought after ensembles. Alongside the elegant classicism of Haydn, they bring their thrilling account of the fourth Bartók quartet to our season featuring the music of Eastern Europe. The influence of Hungarian folk music, the extended string techniques, the innovative harmonic palette are all at the service of the dynamic arched structure of this monumental work. The second half of the concert explores the indigenous music of Norway, the group’s Scandinavian heritage lending total authority to this intriguing repertoire.

“The playing is breathtaking.”
