ZRI – Zum Roten Igel

‘ZRI play with consummate virtuosity, magic and passion. The emotional charge of Brahms illuminated by the gypsy spirit is a great combination!’

Royal Albert Hall Café Ignite Series

Brahms’s Clarinet Quintet at The Red Hedgehog, Vienna’s favourite coffee house and bar! A new look at this great chamber music masterpiece as five world class musicians explore the zeitgeist of 19th Century Vienna. Faithfully re-imagined ZRI present the Clarinet Quintet as played by a tavern ensemble of the time. Scored with santouri and accordion to re-create the rich folk band sounds that inspired the original piece, ZRI weave in gypsy and klezmer material to present a concert from an age when classical and folk music came from the same place.

Johannes Brahms – Clarinet Quintet op 115

ZRI magnify the collision of styles by replacing Brahms’s original quintet instrumentation of clarinet and string quartet with clarinet, violin, cello, santouri (a hammered cimbalom instrument) and accordion. Using this instrumentation all four movements of the Clarinet Quintet are intertwined with sweet and gritty traditional dances from the Carpathian mountains.

Ben Harlan – clarinet

Max Baillie – violin

Matthew Sharp – cello

Jon Banks – accordion

Iris Pissaride – santouri
